Late 1940's Claire McCardell Dress | VINTAGE

Vintage Claire McCardell day dress, ca. late 1940’s. Delicate, semi-sheer fabric in red and white leaf print. Print gives fabric a bit of texture. McCardell’s signature, round, hook-and-eyes down the front, with snaps from the waist to hip-line. Pleated bust. Boning down the front neckline to the waist.

Mel’s Notes: A dress exactly like this one, but with a different print, is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute (acquisition no. 1973.278)

Label: “Claire McCardell Clothes by Townley”

Condition: Very Good, although it appears to have been altered (expertly) at some point to make it larger; godets of the exact same fabric appear to have been added to each side seam to increase the waist size. The original seam lines are still faintly visible, so the dress could potentially be altered back to its original state, although it would probably require a regathering of the skirt. Other items of note: faint spotting to the upper left skirt panel, hidden in the gathers; a few wear spots near the hook and eyes including one that has been repaired with a few stitches; the bottom-most hook appears to have been replaced with a more generic one of the same color. An important example of McCardell’s contribution to American sportswear. Condition Chart
